Personal Experience with Crystals, Astrology, and Elsa the Neighborhood Witch

As we talked about astrology and crystals in class, it had me thinking about some personal experiences with the witches in my community at home. The town that I live in is small, eclectic, and home to a very vibrant arts community. Naturally, there is a popular crystal shop called Earth Stones International owned by a woman named Elsa on the main street next to the shop where I work every summer. The walls in her shop are lined with crystals big and small from the floor to the ceiling. Some of them are labeled with their names and the energies that they enhance, block, or carry, while others remain unmarked and mysterious. For those unmarked crystals, you have to rely on Elsa to teach you their powers.

Over the years, my mom and I have become friends with Elsa. When I first met her, she asked me for my birthday and after crunching some numbers in her head told me that my “number” was six. She told me that this meant that I was very critical of myself and others, and that I should remember this and take a step back to examine my attitudes in most situations. She also told me that I was an Aquarius according to astrology charts, and that at the time I was destined to “be tied up for six months” and then “would experience freedom and openness for the following two years” according to how my planet was moving at the time. Her observation about me being critical-minded is true, but I am not sure as to how accurate her two-year projections were. Regardless, my mom and I enjoyed talking to her and wondering about what our futures may hold.

She would also recommend to us several different crystals according to our astrological signs and the things that we were experiencing in life. She recommended that my mom wear citrine to enhance her creative spirit and vibrant energy while she recommended that I wear red garnet to ground myself. Over the years we have collected so many beautiful crystal bracelets, some meant to project the energy of love, others to summon the energy of wealth, and others to block negative energy from surrounding us. I like wearing them sometimes as a reminder of these things.

Every now and again my mom and I will drop into her shop to say hello and to see if there are any new crystals that we need to take home. It is always a treat to talk to Elsa and listen to her share her knowledge about the world of astrology, her predictions for our futures, and the energies that she thinks we need to bring into our lives. I didn’t realize it until I began this course, but I am so glad to be friends with the neighborhood witch!

  1. Thanks for posting about your and your Mom's personal experiences with gem therapy, Elsa, and her crystal shop. It's really fascinating how some crystals and gems were revered centuries ago and still are today. I believe in holistic medicine, an d I see no reason why someone hurting or sick should not try crystal therapy. If they believe it might work for them, it probably will work for them. I think crystal bracelets, necklaces, and rings have both practical and aesthetic value.

Final Roses and Thorns Reflection

One of my favorite traditions among my friends is to talk about the roses and the thorns of our days. When we do this, we go around the room and discuss our highs (roses) and our lows (thorns). It is one of my favorite ways to reflect on the day, practice gratitude for the good things and to learn from the more difficult parts. As the semester winds down, I thought it would be nice to reflect on my roses and thorns of my semester in Witches class!  Roses One of my favorite aspects of this course was getting to learn about witchcraft as a reflection of culture. One of the ways that this was relevant was through the popular media presentations. As I observed in one of my other blog posts, it was interesting to watch the ways that popular representations of witches have changed over time and how those changes may reflect the type of society that exists in that specific time period. Times seem to always be tough, and at any moment in history there may be a million different things happ...
